What is the Gottman Marital Therapy approach?

Gottman Marital Therapy is a highly regarded, evidence-based approach designed to strengthen relationships by improving communication, deepening emotional connection, and fostering effective conflict management. The method involves three key stages: an in-depth assessment phase to understand relationship dynamics and set goals; a focused treatment phase to build skills and address challenges; and a relapse prevention phase to maintain progress and prevent setbacks. Each stage is tailored to the partners’ unique needs, helping to create lasting, positive change.

What is Integrative Behavioural Couples Therapy?

Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) is an evidence-based approach that helps couples build emotional connection, improve communication, and develop greater acceptance of one another. Drawing on cognitive-behavioral, attachment, and mindfulness-based principles, IBCT supports couples to understand and shift unhelpful patterns, foster emotional intimacy, and strengthen their relationship. Through a balance of acceptance and change strategies, partners learn to navigate differences with compassion and clarity.

Can I Claim Relationship Counselling Through Medicare?

Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Care Plan apply only to individual therapy, so relationship or couples counselling isn’t covered. In relationship counselling, the primary focus is the relationship itself—not a partner individually. Because of this, it falls outside the scope of Medicare. However, many private health insurers do provide rebates for relationship counselling with a registered psychologist, so it’s worth checking your policy.
